A handful of previous projects 👀
Climate Champions
Turner / Warner Bros. Discovery
Climate champions is a brilliant initiative from Cartoon Network that was created to get kids excited about climate action in a light-hearted, accessible way.
It was one of my first projects to pitch for the Climate Champions website. It was great to be involved from the very beginning to decide how kids could be encouraged to perform small actions that would collectively make a significant impact. There was an interactive world map that allowed children to zoom in on different countries and see how many people had undertaken the same challenge. They could also see different stories and perspectives from kids around the world. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the UI for the original site.
The website was so successful (award winning!) that it was turned into an app. I assisted with ad hoc design as well as creating all the motion graphic flourishes and SFX. I worked directly with the developers to export these animations in Lottie so they were ready to implement straight away.
I also produced all of the stickers within the “create” section of the app. The text stickers had to be localised into 13 different languages across EMEA.
Paddington’s Party
Sky Kids
A collection of 4 family-friendly mini games for the Sky Kids app, Sky Q and Sky Glass.
This was a fun challenge to create a series of games that would play on the Sky box. The 4 games loosely follow the narrative of the episode “The Surprise Party” in which Paddington and family try to create a last-minute birthday party for Mrs Brown. The first game is a connect 4 style matching game where the characters are blowing up balloons and releasing them to match colours and clear the screen. The second game “Chef Paddington” is about matching the right party food to the guest. The third game “Messy Cub” involves using the shower to wash away all the cake and marmalade from the previous game. And finally, “Bath Trouble” sees Paddington riding down the stairs in the bathtub, collecting birthday cake and avoiding rubber ducks on his way down.
I created the UI for this game within Adobe Illustrator, being mindful of the target age range and various input modes (from tapping to the remote). This meant there had to be 2 different onboarding instructions for the different controls. The games could be played sequentially in story mode, or just picking at random in arcade mode. It was lovely to work with such a beloved children’s character and I really enjoyed how this one turned out!
Cartoonito App
Turner / Warner Bros. Discovery
A fun, all-in-one app concept for Cartoonito to host IP games and videos.
While this project didn’t make it to launch, it was a great opportunity to explore and create within this lovely colourful brand.
Whilst Cartoonito is a collection of various IP such as Bugs Bunny Builders and Batwheels, there’s also Cartoonito’s family of shapes: Nito, Glob, Wedge and Itty. We wanted to create a space within the app that allowed users into their world. There were a variety of different mini games to explore in the playground, as well as surprising little interactive elements within the scene.
It was my job to create the vector playground elements in the Cartoonito styling, with a variety that could be animated or change colour when tapped. To do this, I was uploading assets into GIT and arranging/organising the incidental animations and SFX within Unity itself. It was lots of fun to explore Unity and I hope they’ll release this project into the wild in the future..
Filters
Jollywise / eOne / Universal / Dyson Japan
Using Facebook’s Spark AR to create and publish Instagram / Facebook filters.
It was over lockdown that I decided I’d like to know how filters work, and have a go at creating one of my own. That first filter is the little purple rain cloud that follows your head and rains down little geometric raindrops, with the 3D assets being created in Blender. From there, I offered this service out to clients and learned more about the possibilities of the program.
I started with a simple filter for Peppa Pig’s Earth Day, which would track a sun to the user’s head, whilst a bee and a cloud gently passed, including Peppa’s branding at the bottom.
The next was a festive themed filter for Jollywise’s Christmas. I added decoration to a pair of glasses attached to the user’s face, animated snowfall and a passing Father Christmas, as well as getting a “ho ho ho” soundbite to play when the user opened thier mouth. The process involved lots of clever ways of diminishing file sizes to get to the tiny 4mb limit for uploading.
The next filter was for Dyson Japan. It involved answering a series of questions by tilting your head left or right to answer. The answers determined which type of Dyson hair styling tool you should use.
Finally, the Trolls filter for Universal would randomly select which character you would be from the new film. Once the user nods their head, a kaleidescope background animation is triggered as well as the Trolls titular track from N*SYNC (who perform as BroZone in the film!)
Energy Town Videos
We Are Futures
A series of educational videos to be played alongside the “Energy Town” game created by Jollywise.
These videos were created to support and further explain the goal of the Enegry Town game. The game itself involves managing a fictional city, making different decisions on how to spend the budget to keep people happy in the most environmental way possible.
The videos were hosted by vairous employees of Equinor, who would explain the energy demands of a city to train the user to become a city planner.
We were given green screen interviews from the employees to edit and incorporate as though they were an incoming call. I re-animated elements of the game to fit the context of the video and included stock footage and glitchy transitions to enhance the futuristic, technology theme throughout.
Cartoonito Site / Games
Turner / Warner Bros. Discovery
Cartoonito Website and Games.
The Cartoonito brand updated from flat colours to a much more riso-print style, with redesigned characters too. I updated their website to incoroprate the new style, branding and characters.
As well as the site, I designed 5 HTML5 games to be hosted on the site.
Tidy Up Time was designed for Baby Looney Tunes, the user would tidy the appropriately coloured toys into their retrospective bins.
The other games were simple, reskinnable bubble pop and catching games for Bugs Bunny Builders and Batwheels.
I designed these games and provided localised titles for 13 other markets. I had to be careful that the UI/UX was appropriate for young players, especially for Tidy Up Time that has a target audience of 2-5 year olds.
Cartoon Network Games
Turner / Warner Bros. Discovery
Unikitty’s Sparkle Blaster and Apple & Onion’s Cat Rescue.
Unikitty was a character from the Lego Movie who got their own pink sparkly show. The mini game was to shoot your positivity at the incoming negativity for a high score.
The second game from Apple and Onion was a frogger style game in which the cat needs to cross the road to reunite with Apple (or Onion). There’s 10 levels with some incredible sound bites and clips from the characters, I really enjoyed Richard Ayoade’s mocking ”I will never get past this level!” every time you get squished before the end. We of course had to be mindful of the subject matter with a big warning about playing in the roads.
I designed the UI / UX for both games.
Secret Story Draw
Jollywise
An initiative to get more BAME illustrators into the children’s media industry.
The Secret Story Draw was a competition that involved users submitting their artwork to a story written by a top children’s author. The winners of each category would then be given an internship at a top UK studio (such as BBC / Aardman etc).
I created a suite of social media assets, instructional videos and printed media for the project. It was lovely to go through videos from the previous winners to see how the initiative impacted their careers.
The social media assets ranged from getting to know the studios, the judges and the authors. As well as countdowns, radio interviews and winner interviews. I also worked on flyers, certificates and the large display you can see at the Children’s Media Conference.
