Yakka Dee - Word Ride

Yakka Dee is a TV show that encourages kids to talk with an emphasis on repetition.

We created this game to live on the Cbeebies Little Learner’s app. The first of its kind to utilise the microphone. This came with its own set of challenges regarding microphone permissions and parents, so extra consideration went into the onboarding sequence.

We also needed to include a way to tap and play for children with accessibility needs regarding talking. The player repeats the new word (or taps!) which in turn makes Yakka Dee jump up and collect that token. The words become more difficult and the player is awarded bronze, silver or gold stars based on their performance on the roller coaster.

I created the UI within Adobe Illustrator, using the shape of the sound wave as a way to display the tracks. At the end of each track, the word is collected as a sticker alongside their bronze/silver/gold star rating. From here the players can replay their recordings and replay/improve a previous score.
